1. 1000D 550gsm PVC Double-Side Coated Fabric for Inflatables: Category Overview

(1) What the Fabric Is

1000D 550gsm PVC Double-Side Coated Fabric for Inflatables is a coated textile made to hold air. A woven polyester scrim carries the load, PVC coatings on both faces make the sheet airtight and watertight, and the finished fabric weighs 550 grams per square meter. Panels are cut and welded into closed chambers, so the fabric must stay flexible for folding yet strong enough to resist pressure from the air inside.

(2) Reading the Specification

The figure 1000D describes the yarn in the scrim. Denier is the weight in grams of 9000 meters of yarn, so a 1000 denier yarn is a thick, high tenacity polyester thread. The figure 550gsm is the finished weight of the fabric in grams per square meter, counting scrim and both coatings. Double-side coated means that PVC covers both faces of the scrim, which seals the textile and gives the weldable surface that inflatable makers need. Together the three terms tell a buyer how strong, how heavy and how airtight the fabric is meant to be.

This guide explains how air pressure loads the fabric, how size and seams affect the design, how consistency is checked, and how buyers can brief an inflatable fabric factory.

2. Structure and Working Principle

(1) How Air Pressure Loads the Wall

P r T T P is the air pressure inside r is the radius of the tube T is the tension in the fabric wall Tube: T equals P times r Sphere: T equals P times r, divided by 2 T is the force per unit width of fabric

The diagram shows the cross section of an inflated tube. The green arrows inside the ring show air pressure pushing outward on the wall in every direction. The wall answers with tension in the fabric, drawn as the two arrows at the top and the bottom. For a simple tube, the tension per unit width equals the pressure multiplied by the radius, and for a sphere it is half of that value. The polyester scrim carries this tension, which is why the yarn size, written as 1000D, matters so much. The PVC coatings keep the air inside, but they are not meant to carry the load. A fabric for inflatables is therefore chosen first by the tension the scrim must take, and second by the airtightness of the coating.

(2) Coating and Welding

The scrim receives PVC on both faces by knife coating, in which a blade spreads PVC paste that is then gelled in an oven, or by lamination, in which pre-made PVC film is bonded to the scrim by heat or an adhesive system. Panels are then joined by high frequency welding or hot air welding, which fuses the PVC coatings into one continuous layer. Because the weld forms between the coatings, a double-side coated fabric is a natural fit for inflatable seams.

3. Why Size Changes the Fabric Demand

The same pressure loads a larger tube more than a smaller one. The drawing below compares four tubes of growing radius at the same air pressure.

1x 2x 3x 4x Radius 0.25 m Radius 0.5 m Radius 0.75 m Radius 1.0 m Same air pressure in every tube, numbers show relative wall tension, circle size follows radius

Each circle is a tube, and its size follows its radius. The number inside shows the relative tension in the wall when the air pressure is the same in all four. A tube of twice the radius carries twice the wall tension, and a tube of four times the radius carries four times as much. This simple relation explains why large inflatables either run at lower pressure or use stronger fabric. A 550gsm fabric with a 1000D scrim sits in a useful range for many structures of moderate size, where the radius and the working pressure are both limited. Very large or high pressure products usually need a heavier build, which the fabric factory can recommend once the design is known. The relation holds for simple shapes, and real products with seams and complex forms need a more detailed design check.

4. Seam Construction for Inflatables

The seam is the part of an inflatable that holds air and carries load at the same time. The cross sections below show three common ways to join two sheets of double-side coated fabric.

Lap seam Butt seam, one tape Butt seam, two tapes Fast to makeStep at the join Flat on the inner faceTape on the outer side Sealed on both facesUsed where both faces matter Fused weld zone or tape layer Schematic cross sections of welded seams, not to scale

The first drawing shows a lap seam, where one sheet overlaps the other and the dark block marks the fused weld zone. It is quick to make and suits many products, but it leaves a small step at the join. The second drawing shows a butt seam, where the two edges meet and a tape is welded over the joint on one side. This keeps one face flat, which helps where the inside or the outside must stay smooth. The third drawing adds a second tape on the opposite face, so the joint is sealed on both sides and carries load through two tapes. Because double-side coated fabric has PVC on every face, each of these seams can be welded without a separate adhesive. The right choice depends on pressure, appearance and the way the product is used, and the fabric factory and the inflatable maker usually settle it together.

5. Common Types and Application Cases

(2) Application Cases

  • Inflatable play structures: bouncers, slides and obstacle courses that are inflated and packed many times.
  • Advertising inflatables: arches, columns and figures that need a smooth printable surface.
  • Air tubes and air beams: inflated tubes that serve as frames for tents and temporary structures.
  • Water leisure products: rafts, floating platforms and similar products of moderate size.
  • OEM inflatable makers: factories that cut and weld their own products from roll goods.

6. Consistency from Roll to Roll

An inflatable maker welds many panels from many rolls, so roll to roll consistency matters. The control chart below shows how coating weight is usually tracked across a production run.
